Optimizing Marine Fuel Usage with Coriolis and Oval Gear Flow Meter

2025-01-16

In the marine industry, the management of marine fuel is a critical aspect that directly impacts operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness. With the increasing size of vessels and the growing pressure on port facilities, the need for precise fuel management has become more important than ever. This article delves into the application of Sure Instrument's Coriolis and Oval Gear flow meters in managing marine fuel, specifically focusing on their role in optimizing fuel usage and reducing operational costs.

Understanding Marine Fuel Systems

Conventional marine power relies on diesel and heavy fuel oil (HFO).

  • Diesel Fuel: Known as light oil, it includes MGO (Marine Gas Oil) and MDO (Marine Diesel Oil), used for maneuvering and auxiliary operations.

  • Heavy Fuel Oil: Commonly referred to as heavy oil, it's categorized into 120cSt, 180cSt, and 380cSt grades, used for normal voyages at sea.

The fuel oil with a viscosity of 120cSt is typically a blend consisting of 15% light diesel oil and 85% fuel oil with a viscosity of 180cSt, previously used at a default temperature range of 100°C to 110°C. The fuel oil with a viscosity of 180cSt is commonly used within a temperature range of 110°C to 120°C. Fuel oil with a viscosity of 380cSt is typically utilized within a temperature range of 130°C to 145°C.

Of course, the temperature for fuel oil usage is now controlled based on viscosity, and there can sometimes be significant variations.

The fuel systems on such vessels are completely separate—diesel systems and high-viscosity fuel oil systems. Some ocean-going vessels operate solely on heavy fuel oil, forgoing diesel. These vessels must consider the impact of sulfur content restrictions when refueling.

Application of Flow Meters in Marine Fuel Management

Oval Gear Flow Meter:

The Oval Gear Flow Meter is a high-precision volumetric flowmeter widely used for measuring liquid flow, particularly suitable for high-viscosity fluids. Its working principle involves measuring fluid flow through the rotation of a pair of oval gears. This type of flowmeter is ideal for measuring media with high viscosity and is insensitive to changes in the viscosity of the fluid being measured. It is easy to install and does not require straight pipe sections before or after the flowmeter.

We also offer high-temperature type (up to 280°C) and high-viscosity type (up to 3000 mPa.s) for customer selection

Coriolis Flow Meter:

The Coriolis Flow Meter utilizes the Coriolis effect to measure the mass flow rate of fluids. It is characterized by high accuracy, repeatability, stability, and the absence of obstructions and moving parts within the fluid channel, making it reliable and long-lasting. It can measure the flow rate of high-viscosity fluids. The Coriolis flowmeter is known for its high precision, ability to measure mass flow, no need for a straight pipe section, high response speed, detection of high-viscosity liquids, and density measurement. However, compared to other detection principles, it is more expensive, has greater pressure loss, and is susceptible to vibration.

The use of Coriolis and Oval Gear flow meters in the shipping industry is crucial for optimizing fuel usage and reducing operational costs. As the industry continues to evolve and face economic challenges, such technological advancements are vital for maintaining efficiency and competitiveness.
