Installing Thermal Mass Flow Meters

2024-10-08

Thermal Mass Flow Meters are recognized for their robust performance and high stability under harsh conditions, operating on the principle of thermal dispersion. These meters utilize two temperature sensors immersed in the medium, where one is heated above the ambient temperature, and the other senses the medium's temperature. As flow velocity increases, the medium carries away more heat, causing a temperature difference between the sensors that varies with the flow rate. This relationship allows for the calculation of the fluid's flow rate based on the temperature differential.

How to Install Thermal Mass Flow Meters

Tube-style Installation

When installing tube-style thermal mass flow meters, select the appropriate standard flange for connection. Pay attention to the following details:

  1. Flow Direction: Ensure the "flow direction" marked on the meter aligns with the actual direction of gas flow.

  2. Connection: Connect the meter to the corresponding standard flange.

Integral Insertion-style Installation

For integral insertion-style thermal mass flow meters, follow these steps:

  1. Welding the Connector: Start by welding the connector to the pipeline.

  2. Installing Valves: Proceed with the installation of valves.

  3. Drilling: Use tools to drill holes for the installation.

  4. Installing the Meter: Complete the installation by fitting the meter into place.

In most cases, the manufacturer provides the pipeline connectors and valves for integral insertion-style installations. For non-weldable pipes, the manufacturer supplies pipe clamps.

Maintenance

For maintenance purposes, you can remove the meter without disrupting production by closing the installed valves.

Additional Tips

  • Ensure the flow meter is level to maintain accuracy.

  • Keep a sufficient straight pipe run before and after the meter to minimize flow disturbances.

  • Avoid installing in areas with strong vibrations or extreme temperatures that could affect the meter's performance.

Understanding the principles behind thermal mass flow meters and adhering to proper installation procedures is crucial for accurate and reliable flow measurements. By following the guidelines outlined above, you can ensure your flow meter operates optimally and maintain process efficiency.
